Acanthosis Nigricans (AN) is a skin disease that causes the skin to darken and thicken. The skin may take on a velvet-like like feel to it. Many patients mistakenly believe that they’ve allowed some type of dye to touch their skin and will try to scrub it off. AN cannot be scrubbed off.

What causes Acanthosis Nigricans?

AN can be caused by certain medications. It is also a sign of a metabolic syndrome such as pre-diabetes. Making lifestyle changes before diabetes develops can prevent diabetes. Certain hormonal disorders and cancers may also be responsible for AN.

AN is diagnosed by visual examination by a dermatologist.

What are the treatments for Acanthosis Nigricans?

AN is not a disease itself. It is the results of another underlying disease state that needs to be addressed. Generally, if that underlying disease state is treated and improved the skin patches will fade.
