Guillain-Barre Syndrome Can Go From Bad to Worse… and Very Quickly!

Guillain-Barre syndrome, or GBS, occurs when the body’s immune system attacks the nerves.

People will usually notice tingling and weakness in their arms and legs. As annoying as that can feel, GBS can quickly turn into a medical emergency because it can paralyze the whole body. Those experiencing severe symptoms are usually hospitalized for treatment.

It’s still unknown what triggers GBS, but many people report having a respiratory infection or the stomach flu immediately preceding the onset. There are treatments that can effectively ease the symptoms, but some people are left with residual effects, including numbness, fatigue, and weakness.

If you begin to experience any of the symptoms listed below, your body is telling you something is very wrong, and you need to talk to your doctor. GBS may be rare, but it’s not outside of the realm of possibility, so don’t take chances with your health.

Here’s what to look out for:

  • Breathing problems
  • Numbness and tingling in the arms and legs
  • Heart and blood pressure fluctuations
  • Bowel and bladder problems
  • Nerve pain
  • Blood clots

One young man recorded a video blog in which he detailed his journey with GBS. Take a few moments to view the world through his eyes, and learn more about GBS.
