Multiple myeloma is a cancer of the blood that develops in the plasma cells found in soft tissue at the center of the bone, called bone marrow. Bone disease is a frequent complication of multiple myeloma– in fact, more than 80% of myeloma patients suffer from bone lesions. The bone lesions can lead to pain, fractures and spinal cord compression. Myeloma patients with bone disease require therapy to eliminate myeloma, as well as treatment to strengthen the bone and control pain. Some patients may require radiotherapy or surgical interventions.
