What is epithelioid sarcoma?

Epithelioid sarcoma is a rare form of soft tissue cancer, typically beginning the forearm, hands, fingers, feet, and lower legs. Regardless of where it starts, it tends to spread unless there is an intervention. It usually affects teenagers and young adults, although it can impact people of any age. 

What are the symptoms of epithelioid sarcoma?

A firm mass is usually the first sign of this cancer. At times, the growths appear as ulcers on the skin. Both can be tender and painful. Muscle weakness, contractures, and numbness are other symptoms. 

What causes epithelioid sarcoma?

Medical professionals are unsure as to what exactly causes this cancer, but they have linked it to a mutated SMARCB1 gene. 

How is epithelioid sarcoma diagnosed?

As there are not usually symptoms early in the disease and symptoms appear in other conditions, it can be difficult to diagnose this cancer. Doctors will perform a physical exam, followed by tests, including a biopsy and imaging tests. 

What are the treatments for epithelioid sarcoma?

The first treatment option is typically surgery to remove the growth. In very severe cases, the limb may have to be amputated. Other options are radiation therapy, chemotherapy, and clinical trials.
