What is rhabdomyosarcoma?
Rhabdomyosarcoma is a rare form of cancer that develops in soft tissue. It typically begins to form in the arms, legs, head, neck, urinary system, and reproductive system. Children are mainly affected by this cancer, although people of any age can get it.
What are the symptoms of rhabdomyosarcoma?
The symptoms can vary depending on the location of the tumor. Cancer that starts in the head or neck can cause effects like bleeding in the throat, nose, and ears, bulging or swelling eyes, and headaches.
Cancer in the urinary or reproductive system causes issues with bowel movements, masses or bleeding in the vagina or rectum, trouble urinating, and blood in the urine.
What causes rhabdomyosarcoma?
Medical professionals are unsure of the cause of this cancer. However, they have identified risk factors. These include a family history of cancer and certain genetic conditions, such as Noonan syndrome and Costello syndrome.
How is rhabdomyosarcoma diagnosed?
A physical exam is the first step in diagnosis, which is usually followed by tests. CT scans, MRIs, X-rays, bone scans, biopsies, and PET scans are all used.
What are the treatments for rhabdomyosarcoma?
A combination of therapies are often used to treat this cancer. Treatment options include surgery, chemotherapy, radiation therapy, and clinical trials.
