Why Light Therapy Is The Best Therapy For HD

Could slowing the progression of Huntington’s Disease (HD) be as simple as using a really bright light?

Not quite. That’s an oversimplification, but let’s break it down.

In April, researchers at the University of Cambridge received a donation of Lumie Brazil light boxes for their work in looking at the tolerability and efficacy of ways to improve the sleep quality and life of patients with HD.

The key factor is that these methods do not use medication.

So, what are these non-pharmaceutical methods, you ask?

  • Sleep restriction therapy
  • Bright light therapy

People with HD exhibit signs of sleep-wake or circadian changes, and we all know how important sleep is to your overall health and happiness.

With HD, it’s actually a bit of a chicken and the egg situation: Which happens first, HD progression or the sleep-disturbances?

Either way, this new research aims to find out if those sleep problems can be improved without resorting to medication. The Lumie Brazil lights will be used to simulate a normal light-dark cycle in patients daily environment.

By improving the circadian rhythm, the researchers believe they will also see improvements in mood and the overall health of people with HD.

Why not just use a normal light?

Well, the Lumie Brazil is MUCH brighter than normal lighting. In fact, it’s comparable to looking outside on a cloudless day.

The research into these therapies is supposed to run until December 2016. So stay tuned for the conclusion for this promising research!
