“She had blue skin,
And so did he.
He kept it hid
And so did she.
They searched for blue
Their whole life through,
Then passed right by-
And never knew.”
-Shel Silverstein
I found this quote on rarediseases.org in an article by Aileen Tobin. I really liked her explanation of what the quote means to her. She said,
“This poem made me think about how far the rare disease community has come. You no longer have to search for other people with “blue skin” all your life, because there are already blue-skinned communities out there waiting for you. Rare diseases are notoriously isolating, but thanks to the internet and the efforts of the community as a whole, they don’t have to be. Many groups have emerged both inside and outside of NORD that bring rare disease patients and supporters together.”
