Royalty in the Operating Room: Prince William Shadows Robotic Surgery

Prince William has taken the last several months to get out and educate himself in worlds he’s unfamiliar with. Today reported his recent venture to observing robotic surgery, which came shortly after learning how to off-road drive, as well as making a cameo appearance in “Stars Wars: The Last Jedi”. He also has observed several surgeons during a handful of procedures earlier this month at the Royal Marsden Hospital in London.

The Royal Marsden NHS Foundation Trust is known for its cancer robotic surgery, and is the most prominent program in the UK. Prince William is currently the president of the hospital. The Duke of Cambridge clearly showed an interest during the procedures and asked some of the surgeons questions through-out the day. One of the questions the prince asked in a clip was in relation to a patient undergoing a surgery for a rare cancer called adenoid cystic carcinoma.

Prince William also had the chance to watch a significantly difficult tumor removal operation from a patient’s esophagus. Impressively, these intense surgeries are minimally invasive. The hospital uses what is known as da Vinci robot surgical systems. These robot systems help to perform efficient, speedy surgeries, and additionally promote faster recovery for patients, with minimal scarring.

On top of sitting in on multiple procedures, Prince William had the opportunity to speak with several of these patients post operation at their bedside. As reported by Today, he was very warm and friendly. He spoke with many patients, but one man in particular drew much of his attention, as he use to be a former staff member there at the Royal Marsden Hospital.

Prince William has been the president since 2007, and prior to his appointment, the hospital was overseen by the late Princess Diana, his mother.
