Mastocytosis refers to an entire group of disorders. All of these conditions are characterized by a rapid production of mast cells (MCs), which are abnormal. This overproduction can occur in all organ systems throughout the body including the spleen, the mucosal surfaces, the liver, the bone marrow, and the lymph nodes.

The condition is characterized as either systemic or cutaneous. The systemic form of the condition can either involve the skin or not involve the skin.

Systemic mastocytosis patients can be affected by different triggers which activate the abnormal mast cells. These triggers can lead to anaphylactic reactions which may be life threatening. They can also lead to multi-organ dysfunction.

Dental Management

A recent publication conducted by researchers in Plymoth, UK discussed how the dental complications of these conditions can be handled. There is an increase risk of dental complications in this condition due to stress and certain treatments.
