Okay, I’m just baffled. Baffled. I’m trying to process my feelings as I’m writing this article because, well, that’s what women have to do sometimes.
So, I just posted two articles about Tourette’s syndrome (TS). It seems that the more I learn, the more my head is spinning as I ask the question: What’s the best way to help spread awareness?
I thought that, by writing about some famous and not-so-famous people who have TS, it would help in some small way and maybe it has? I hope so!
But just out of curiosity, I felt compelled to go back and revisit the Curb Your Enthusiasm episode I mentioned before, which you can watch (be forewarned there is significant swearing) here. You see, being a “certain age,” I suspected that my memory might not be quite accurate compared to when I watched it back in 2009—and I was right!
So just now, I made myself watch the clip in its entirety which is why I’m so baffled!
I think I got it wrong before in my other posts, because it seems to me that Larry David—the director, writer, producer, and brilliant comedian—is SUPPORTING the chef who has TS.
He’s not ridiculing him; he’s supporting him. Or is he simply looking for an “out” to make it SEEM like he is supporting him by starting a cursing rant that goes viral in the restaurant? I don’t know.
Granted, only a small percentage of people actually have “coprolalia”—the symptom associated with TS where which people compulsively swear.
So, maybe even if the TV show put TS in the spotlight in that regard, it’s not helping the cause? I don’t know. It’s definitely got people talking!
If you would like to help spread awareness, check out the new national media campaign spearheaded by the Tourette Association of America.
So what do you think? I dare you to watch the full clip of the show and post your take on Patient Worthy. Your opinion matters in order to help end the stigma and get the dialogue straight.
