Rolling with the Punches of Cushing’s Disease

I read the most AMAZING post—and I mean AMAZING post (I am not kidding! OMG!) written by a woman who has been living with Cushing’s disease for less than 5 years. It transcends anything that I’ve read recently because it’s incredibly inspirational and FUNNY.

I was laughing out loud, passed it on to my colleagues, and THEN I went back and read it again. It’s really insightful about the disease—very educational, but it’s also sooooooooooooooooo WACKY and funny, that no matter what disease or crisis you’re facing in life, you’ll laugh your ass silly! Ya gotta read this—just don’t read it late at night, cuz you’ll get so worked up, you’ll have to jump outta bed to go pee! Seriously.

This particular woman was serving her nation (and world, actually) in the Peace Corps in Ethiopia and all was well. Then, in less than 18 months, she had to be medically evacuated after suffering from a severe clinical depression that had her placed on suicide watch—actively. She was ready to 86 this world and check out—and fast. Her depression was so bad, she was hospitalized in psychiatric ward for nearly a month! We’re talking harrowing here—she was hospitalized against her will.

At one point, her clinical team of doctors thought she’d been raped during her Peace Corps service which, in their mind, it was PTSD that was the root of her problem. Wrong. Her story goes on and on through the brain surgeries she’s had to endure to remove a tumor in her pituitary gland but what’s so inspirational to me is that she truly does believe that it’s better to laugh than cry in life.

So in her blog, she bombs the hell out of fear and sadness with more laughs and side notes than you ever thought possible, but it’s not overkill. It’s just perfect. How ANYONE could laugh after gaining nearly 50 pounds in less than three months and surviving four unsuccessful brain surgeries is beyond me, but SHE found a way to laugh and make US laugh—and thank God! Thank HER!
