Joe Beernink has a blog describing his experience with Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS).
More than three years ago, he wrote about his recovery and his healing process. He was told that the recovery could take anywhere from a few weeks to as long as three years. But his process has been much longer than that. Today, he says he has pretty much recovered, but he’s not 100 percent back to the way things were.
About three years ago, he had to use a walker, could not see well, and slept just about 20 hours in a day. He states that everything is stable now, and he is better, considering what he has been through.
Although things have improved, he experiences some lasting side effects of Guillain-Barré Syndrome.
Joe feels like his eyes are not the same. He says they tend to twitch a lot when he is tired. This makes him have a harder time with reading. Also, his balance is off, but he thinks this might be an effect of his Charcot Marie Tooth Disease. Fatigue is another symptom he experiences often, due to GBS.
He has changed some things about his life to diminish the long term side effects. This includes being gluten-free and changing his diet. He also moved to a location closer to his work, so he could spend less energy commuting to work each day.
Joe blogs for a therapeutic effect and hopes that his writing will give others hope.
