Some of you may have heard this story, others may be completely new to this, but bear with us on this funny and on-topic story that made the rounds on the Internet this week!
A #MeToo Critique Gone Wrong
For the last two years, this country has gone through a social reckoning of sexual assault and sexual harassment in the workplace with the #MeToo and #TimesUp movements; and a major chapter of this movement was the Supreme Court confirmation battle of Brett Kavanaugh, after multiple women came forward and accused him of sexual assault and impropriety when he was a high school and college student.
One mother interpreted the scandal as an assault on the presumption of innocence, and tweeted her concerns about what would become of her son during this #MeToo era.
Her since-deleted tweet read:
“This is MY son. He graduated #1 in boot camp. He was awarded the USO award. He was #1 in A school. He is a gentleman who respects women. He won’t go on solo dates due to the current climate of false sexual accusations by radical feminists with an axe to grind. I VOTE. #HimToo
We won’t debate the merits of her point – or the backlash – but long story short, the internet had a lot of thoughts on it; including Pieter Hanson, the subject of the tweet.
From Political Commentary to Disease Advocacy
Pieter proved to be the very gentleman his mother described him to be – choosing not to attack her or fan the flames, but instead divert attention to a cause everyone – and especially us here! – can rally behind.
So let’s follow his lead, shall we?
