Sarcoidosis Research Center Focused on Patient Care

Exciting news for people living with sarcoidosis!

Vanderbilt University Medical Center (VUMC) has developed a Sarcoidosis Center of Excellence.

Presently, Dr. Wonder Drake is the director of the center. She has done research on the pathogenesis (how a disease develops) of sarcoidosis. Moreover, the Center is focused on bringing together experts in immunology, genetics, infectious disease, and pulmonary medicine to better address the sarcoidosis problem.

Over the years, VUMC has already done a lot of research on sarcoidosis. In addition, they have provided clinical care for those who have been diagnosed with the condition.

Sarcoidosis is an inflammatory disease that can affect many organs in the body. Dr. Drake states that the disease incidence, morbidity as well as mortality will continue to rise around the world. With it increasing, there unfortunately has not been a rise in innovative treatments for sarcoidosis. She believes that a lack of an animal model is a major limitation to researchers understanding the pathogenesis of sarcoidosis. In fact, the newer facility will provide them will the chance to develop an animal model.

Along with focusing on research, they will provide a weekly clinic that treats patients. Furthermore, the Center will make it easier for international patients and patients across the country to be seen by a team of experts.
