March is Cerebral Palsy Awareness Month

The month of March is recognized as Cerebral Palsy Awareness Month, a time that is dedicated to spreading awareness among the general public and the medical community about cerebral palsy, a group of movement disorders that occur in early childhood. It is estimated to impact as many as 17 million people around the world. This awareness month has taken place since 2005, and was first established thanks to the efforts of Johnny Isakson and Robert Case, who were senators at the time for the states of Georgia and Pennsylvania.

Cerebral palsy are disorders affecting movement that begin to show impacts in early childhood. The disorder is linked to damage or abnormal development in the areas of the brain that are responsible for balance, movement, and posture. In many cases, the precise cause is unknown, but the problem often occurs during the pregnancy or soon after or during birth. Risk factors include preterm birth, problems during delivery, being a twin, and certain infections during the pregnancy. Symptoms include tremors, poor coordination, seizures, stiff muscles, weak muscles, and problems with vision, hearing, cognition, sensation, speaking, and swallowing. Symptoms may worsen or change over time. Treatment is varied and complex and may include certain medications; physical, occupational, and speech therapy; water therapy; orthotic devices; and communication aids. The goal of Cerebral Palsy Awareness Month include:

  • Spreading knowledge about the disorder and its impacts, as well as the need for further research to improve treatment and find a cure.
  • Advocating for new treatment guidelines, which haven’t been updated in decades.
  • Understanding the power of the cerebral palsy community to speak up and advocate for change.

To show your recognition and support for this awareness month, wear green clothing. This color was selected to represent growth and youthfulness, as well as to signify the hope for acceptance and treatment advancements.
