When I was 15 and received my learner’s permit, they asked if I’d like to be an organ donor. I was a little freaked out at the image of getting to that point, given that I was just about to drive a 4,000 lb car on the highway for my first time. BUT, I ultimately decided that yes– were something to happen to me, the silver lining is the potential of saving someone else’s life with my tissues and organs.
February 14th marks the (in)famous Valentine’s Day. Depending on your dating status, this may or may not excite you. But what about those of us in the rare disease community?
According to the Donor Alliance, 120,000 people are on the organ waiting list, in addition to an innumerable amount of patients in need of other donations, such as platelets and bone marrow. So why not do your part and sign up to be an organ donor? Potentially, the organs from one person could save eight lives, and heal up to 75 lives.
