These days it’s difficult to walk through a public gathering and not see a “Keep Calm and Carry On” T-shirt, poster, coffee mug, or bumper sticker. As a catchphrase originally coined during World War II for a British public safety poster, variations of the phrase have since been adopted and rewritten by all types of groups, including the Sarcoidosis Facebook group.
Sarcoidosis is an accumulation of inflammatory cells that typically form in lumps called granulomas. The granulomas can be found in any body organ, but most often are found in the lungs, skin and/or lymph nodes. Treatments are targeted to relieve symptoms, improve organ function, and control inflammation. The disease can be particularly difficult to diagnose as it affects each patient in many different ways.
For this Facebook group, the “Keep Calm and Carry On” phrase is a reminder to members that although Sarcoidosis Awareness Month is in April, the disease is ever-present for those living with it.
The group page is an informative first step for anyone struggling with the disease. You will find “Sarcoid Factoids,” links to sarcoidosis awareness postings, and community fundraising efforts in the name of sarcoidosis. The hope of the members is that greater awareness will a garner greater interest in research. Many related posts share the newest medical updates that are a result of the most up-to-date research.
In addition to informational posts, the group also hosts the Foundation for Sarcoidosis Research tribute wall on the last Monday of April to honor and remember those who have passed away from the disease.
