Gastroschisis Study
Cincinnati Children’s Medical Center, Texas Children’s Hospital, and Avery’s Angels are working together to try to learn more about the long-term gastrointestinal issues that people born with gastroschisis may be having. If you (or your child) is older than 12 years of age and was born with gastroschisis, we would appreciate if you (or your child) completed an online gastroschisis survey as part of a research study (CCHMC IRB # 2018-2921).
This study consists of 2 parts, with the first part of the study consisting of a 5-10 minute online survey. The second part of the study would consist of you (or your child) providing a saliva sample via a collection kit that will be mailed to your house. If you do not want to participate in the second part of the study and do not want to provide a saliva sample, we would still appreciate if you took the time to complete the online survey. We are studying the possible long-term effects of gastroschisis as well as a gene called FUT2. The FUT2 gene determines secretor or non-secretor status, and this may be associated with some gastrointestinal symptoms. Using your (or your child’s) saliva, we will define your (or your child’s) FUT2 secretor status and will try to determine if there is an association between FUT2 status with gastrointestinal symptoms that you (or your child) may be having.
If you do decide that you would like to participate in the saliva collection portion of this study, you will be emailed a consent form after completing the survey portion of the study that will need to be signed electronically prior to the collection kit being mailed to your home.
