The Amyloidosis Foundation is a non-profit organization that is committed to working and advocating for the amyloidosis patient community. The foundation is dedicated to supporting amyloidosis patients and their families while promoting amyloidosis education, advocacy, and research.
Amyloidosis is a group of diseases in which an abnormal protein, called amyloid fibrils, accumulates in body tissue. There are many different subtypes of amyloidosis which are caused by a specific protein misfolding. Amyloidosis can be the result of a genetic abnormality or it can be acquired. Symptoms can include a feeling of lightheadedness upon standing, fatigue, bleeding, weight loss, shortness of breath, and leg swelling. Without treatment, amyloidosis can be lethal in as little as a few months, but outcomes improve with treatment and vary depending on the type; patients can survive for much longer with good treatment and less severe types. It doesn’t take more than a few minutes on the Amyloidosis Foundation website to understand that this organization is doing great work for amyloidosis patients. With this in mind, you may be wondering how you can help support the work of the foundation.
Well one great way to get involved is to participate in the foundation’s second annual Run For Your Life! 5K/10K run. This Halloween themed running/walking fundraiser has appeal for the entire family. If you love running and competition and also want to support a worthy cause, than this sounds like the event for you. Participants are encouraged to show up in their Halloween costume. Winners of the races and costume contest will be duly rewarded.
The event will be held on October 13th at Independence Oaks County Park in Clarkston, Michigan. Registration ends on October 8th, but an early registration can get you some extra gear and prizes. Learn more about the event here.
All proceeds from this event will go towards amyloidosis research and other programs that will benefit amyloidosis patients and their families.
