Patients with Nasopharyngeal Carcinoma May Benefit From the Chinese Herbal Medicine Shengmai Yin

Nasopharyngeal carcinoma consists of cancers originating in the throat and the nose. Due to the way the cancers are positioned, radiation therapy may not be an option. Also, a number of patients are found to be resistant to radiotherapy.

According to a recent article in Eureka Alert, Shengmai Yin, a Chinese medicine composed of ginseng and other Chinese herbs, affects DNA methylation and renders cells vulnerable to radiation.

Patients with nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) who are radioresistant may benefit from the use of Shengmai Yin and other ‘radiosensitizers.’ These chemical compounds increase a cell’s vulnerability to radiation.

A paper on the subject was available online as of December 2021 in the 6th issue of the Pharmaceutical Analysis journal Volume 11.

About DNA Methylation

DNA methylation plays a significant role in a wide variety of biological functions such as DNA repair and tumor radiotherapy. It is essential for normal development.

DNA methylation is the result of a change in gene expression and not by a mutation of the genetic code. Therefore, epigenetic changes can be reversed.

Dr. Qin Fan, the research team’s co-leader, explained that the team investigated whether Shengmai Yin can alter the DNA methylation status in NPC cells. The team searched further to determine if such changes would influence the radiosensitivity of the cells.

Dr. Ying Lv of NanFang Hospital in China, the study’s co-leader, explained that their study focused on three aspects of Shengmai Yin in the role of a therapeutic supplement for radiotherapy.

  1. Shengmai Yin reduces side effects from radiation; it also increases efficacy and reduces radiotherapy side effects in NPC.
  2. The medical establishment has relied on traditional preventative medicine for years. Shengmai Yin’s anti-tumorigenic effect now presents a viable alternative for these patients
  3. Shengmai Yin provides the pharmaceutical industry with a ‘radiosensitizer’ that is cost-effective.

In summary, Shengmai Yin shows potential. It is an effective, safe, and cost-effective radiosensitizer for use as a therapeutic supplement in radiation therapy. The researchers believe that developing supplements based on Shengmai Yin would increase overall survival for NPC patients.

Rose became acquainted with Patient Worthy after her husband was diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML) six years ago. During this period of partial remission, Rose researched investigational drugs to be prepared in the event of a relapse. Her husband died February 12, 2021 with a rare and unexplained occurrence of liver cancer possibly unrelated to AML.
