April 9th is promising to be a beautiful day this year. By then, spring should be in full swing. For some people that phrase rings quite literally. With the return of warm and pleasant days, many take to the links for a round of golf. In support of Batten disease research, HOPE is hosting its ninth annual HOPE on the Green tournament. HOPE on the Green takes place on April 9th this year at The Woodlands County Club Palmer Course in Texas. The first event began in 2010 and has been going strong since then. Through the tournament, HOPE seeks to raise funds and awareness for Batten disease research. Will Herndon, a Woodlands resident, partly inspired the tournament. Will has Batten disease, and was reaching six years of age at the time of the first tournament.
Nine years later, the HOPE foundation approaches the precipice of an important clinical trial. This trial could provide the most promising treatment in the history of Batten disease. Meanwhile Will is now 15 years old. His life depends on the development of this treatment. Currently, no treatment for Batten disease exists. It is inevitably fatal.
“In the years since Will’s diagnosis, we have never been more filled with HOPE then we are now,” says Will’s mother, Missy Herndon.
Missy Herndon is also one of HOPE’s co-founders. “Collaborative research efforts have led us to potentially one of the most promising treatments in the history of juvenile Batten disease, a medication to slow the progression of the disease. With the support of The Woodlands community, we are truly making a difference in the lives of Batten children all over the world.”
This year’s HOPE on the Green Golf Tournament offers unlimited food and beverages course-side, a variety of contests before the tournament, Hole-In-One prizes, the Blindfold Hole, and a Helicopter Ball drop– all of this with HOPE’s trademark hospitality.
Check-in for the tournament will begin at 10:00am. Contests and the driving range open concurrently. The Helicopter Ball Drop begins at noon, and the tournament begins with a shot gun start at 12:30 pm. Dinner, and celebration to follow the tournament. Players must register to participate. The cost for a foursome is $1000, and sponsorships open at $1500. More information regarding registration can be found at www.willherndon.org.
