I’m sure you’ve heard these popular phrases:
- Don’t judge a book by its cover
- Looks can be deceiving
- You never know what someone else is going through until you walk a mile in their shoes
For Preston Mayfield, his private battle is cystic fibrosis. He was only 6 weeks old when he was diagnosed and, to make matters worse, his father died of cancer three weeks later.
But early setbacks and heartbreak haven’t stopped Preston and his mom from staying strong
Many of you can identify with what Preston’s mom, Mel, describes as the toughest part of his cystic fibrosis:
“People will often go ‘They don’t look sick’ – but they can be very sick.”
Through years of ups and downs, they’ve settled into a strict routine with his CF. Now 12 years old, Preston lives a normal life with the addition of medications and physiotherapy. This includes a two week stay about two times a year at a local hospital where he gets antibiotics and nutrients to help him maintain a healthy weight, and to make sure his lungs are staying strong.
But to accomplish all of that, Preston and his mom receive help from the Children’s Hospital Foundation Queensland. If you’d like to make a donation to this wonderful charity, please click here.
As Preston’s mother said, their wish for Christmas every year is a cystic fibrosis cure. Maybe this year will be the year!
