I mean c’mon… As a patient, I want my doctor or healthcare provider to show an interest in what’s going on around me as there may be an answer buried in there somewhere. So the importance of asking background questions to patients, especially school-aged patients, cannot be undersold.

My little cousin went undiagnosed for years with a chronic condition, turns out that he was frequently playing at an abandoned house with his friends the walls of which were painted with lead based paint. Doctors may have picked up on this if they had bothered to ask him what his favorite pass time was.
