An Odd Link Between ALS and Sushi

I love sushi. I also love travelling to hot places who typically serve fish with higher instances of mercury. While I’ve always been aware that if you’re trying to get pregnant, you shouldn’t eat sushi because of the potential mercury in it, I never thought twice about eating it.

Now I might be thinking twice. According to the International Business Times, people with diets higher in mercury content were twice as likely to have ALS.

A study was conducted where participants’ diets were observed by how much fish they ate and whether or not that fish had high mercury content. Results showed that 61% of patients that had ALS were in the top 25% of participants with high mercury intake.

According to the World Health Organization, mercury can damage the immune system, digestion, and the neurological system. While it’s affects aren’t fully understood, this link is a little scary… and a little informative about our diet choices.
