Cornerback Jason McCourty honored the Embrace Kids Foundation this year. It’s an organization dedicated to helping individuals facing various health issues. Their goal is to ease some of the burdens which accompany illness such as emotional and financial hardships. One of the illnesses they support is sickle cell anemia.
Jason’s twin brother Devin also plays for the Patriots and for the last two years they have each work one cleat to support sickle cell. Why? Because the issue is extremely close to their heart.
Two people in their family have sickle cell and their father is a carrier of the gene. Thankfully, it wasn’t passed to the brothers but they still feel deeply connected to those suffering with the condition. They have both been involved with the Embrace Kids Foundation since they were in college.
Derek Rivers, another Patriot player, chose to raise awareness for Duchenne muscular dystrophy this year. Specifically, his cleats represented the Jar of Hope. The organization raises money which goes toward research for the condition.
