About Autoinflammatory Disease

Autoinflammatory disease comprises a broad category of diseases that are characterized by systemic inflammation that is either chronic or periodic. These are disorders of the innate immune system, which distinguish them from autoimmune diseases, which are disorders of the adaptive immune system. In some conditions, these definitions may overlap, however. Symptoms vary but can include fevers, rashes, diarrhea, abdominal pain, and joint pain. Examples include Behçet disease, Crohn’s disease, gout, and hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis.
