Samsung has announced that its Galaxy Ring will soon support an FDA-cleared sleep apnea risk detection feature, making it the first smart ring to offer a regulatory-authorized tool for identifying signs associated with obstructive sleep apnea.
The update, expected to arrive this fall, extends a capability that Samsung previously introduced on its Galaxy Watch lineup. Using biometric sensors, the feature analyzes overnight health data, including blood oxygen trends, to identify patterns that may be associated with moderate to severe obstructive sleep apnea. While the technology is not intended to provide a formal diagnosis, it can help users recognize potential warning signs and encourage further evaluation by a healthcare professional.
Samsung’s sleep apnea detection technology has already received regulatory recognition in multiple markets. The company secured approval from South Korea’s Ministry of Food and Drug Safety in 2023 and later obtained De Novo authorization from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. These clearances allow Samsung to promote the feature as a clinically relevant screening aid rather than a simple wellness metric.
The addition of sleep apnea detection to the Galaxy Ring represents a significant milestone in the wearable health sector. Although competing smart rings offer sleep-related monitoring features, none currently provide the same level of FDA-cleared sleep apnea screening. For example, some rings track breathing irregularities or nighttime respiratory disturbances, which can be associated with sleep apnea, but these tools generally lack formal regulatory authorization for sleep apnea risk assessment.
Samsung revealed the new capability alongside updates to its latest wearable devices, including the Galaxy Watch 9 and Galaxy Watch Ultra 2. The company has not yet detailed whether the ring-based experience will mirror the functionality already available on Galaxy Watches, but the core objective remains the same: helping users identify potential health concerns through passive overnight monitoring.
The update may also broaden access to sleep health screening. Many consumers prefer lightweight rings over smartwatches for overnight wear, while others may not own a smartwatch at all. By bringing the feature to a screenless wearable, Samsung could make sleep apnea monitoring more comfortable and convenient for a wider range of users.
The announcement also suggests that Samsung is prioritizing software-driven enhancements for the current Galaxy Ring generation rather than introducing a successor device in the near term. No Galaxy Ring 2 was unveiled during the company’s recent product event, reinforcing industry speculation that the next-generation ring may still be years away. In the meantime, advanced health features such as FDA-cleared sleep apnea detection could help extend the relevance and clinical value of Samsung’s existing smart ring platform.
