What is Trigeminal Neuralgia?

Trigeminal neuralgia (TN) is a neurological condition that causes chronic pain Trigeminal Neuralgia in the trigeminal (5th) cranial nerve.

There are two types: the typical form, TN1, and the atypical form, TN2. TN1 causes an extreme, burning pain in the face that may continue on and off for two hours. TN2 is a constant burning and stabbing that may be less intense than TN1. A patient may suffer from both types.

Frequently, TN2 is a progression of TN1. TN typically affects women more than men, in people ages 50 and older, though it has been known to occur in younger people and even babies.

TNnMe drafted a letter to the WHO’s Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, asking for the WHO to add “Trigeminal Neuralgia” on their health topic list.

According to the letter:

  • We need you to add Trigeminal Neuralgia to the “Health Topics” list.
  • We need access to treatment and resources for everyone, no matter where they live.
  • We need new medications and procedures to therapeutically target the Trigeminal      Nerve.
  • We need awareness amongst doctors for proper diagnosis.
  • We need more Neurologists, Neurosurgeons, and Dentists specializing in the treatment of Facial Pain Disorders.
  • We need an understanding of TN at governmental agencies to help obtain benefits for disability.
  • We need WHO’s assistance in funding research for a cure for Trigeminal Neuralgia.
