Living with an invisible illness can be difficult for a myriad of reasons, one of which is awareness. Those affected by vestibular disorders know this all too well. The word vestibular is in reference to a system in the inner ear that plays a role in spatial awareness, which relates heavily to balance.
People with balance disorders go through life without a visible sign of their condition, leading many people to misunderstand or even dismiss their symptoms. In addition, because vestibular disorders are invisible, little awareness exists for them.
Luckily, VeDA is fighting for a change. They created Balance Awareness Week in 1997 with the purpose of raising awareness for balance disorders. Next week, from September 19 to 25, VeDA will fundraise, put on events, share resources, and more to raise awareness for balance conditions like vertigo, dizziness, and imbalance.
