Rock Bottom in Mexico: The Thyroid Eye Disease Flare That Forced Me to Rebuild My Health

Editor’s Note: Patient Worthy is proud to share part 7 of 10 of Elena Genik’s blog series, detailing her experiences with Graves disease and thyroid eye disease.

The Perfect Storm

The beginning of 2024 was one of the hardest periods of my life. My health had already been unstable. I was recovering from a viral illness around Christmas and my birthday, and my body was clearly struggling to bounce back. Then I traveled to Mexico to spend time with friends. I wanted rest, sunlight, joy, and a reset. Instead, everything fell apart at the same time.

Within days, I became extremely sick. I could barely get out of bed. I slept for hours at a time, and even simple tasks made me feel faint and breathless. At the time, I did not know I had contracted a parasite. I thought it was food poisoning that would pass in a day or two. It did not. My symptoms worsened, and in the middle of that, my Graves disease flared again.

My TED symptoms changed dramatically during this time. My left eye, which had previously bulged, began to droop instead. The right eye began protruding. Even the color of my eyelids changed slightly. The fear this triggered is hard to describe. I felt like my face was becoming unfamiliar.

When Your Body Cannot Keep Up

The exhaustion I felt in Mexico was unlike anything I had experienced. I could hardly stand for more than a few minutes without feeling winded. Walking across a room felt like climbing a hill. I had constant dizziness, nausea, and weakness. My body felt like it was shutting down.

There is a specific kind of fear that comes with not being able to trust your own body. Every day I woke up hoping I would feel slightly better. Instead, it felt like my body was sinking deeper and deeper into something I could not name.

I wanted to seek medical care in Mexico, but I did not have access to my usual doctors, medications, or supplements. I felt trapped inside my own body, far from home and unable to do anything except wait for the worst part to pass.

The Unexpected Lab Results

When I finally returned home and had my thyroid levels checked, I expected to see numbers indicating severe hypothyroidism. My symptoms lined up perfectly with thyroid dysfunction. I prepared myself for that result.

But the labs shocked me. My Free T3 and Free T4 were in the optimal range. My thyroid was functioning reasonably well. What I thought was a thyroid crash was actually something else entirely.

My entire body was in a deep state of stress and overwhelmed by illness. My adrenal system had been functioning on overdrive for too long. Between the parasite, the viral illness, the holidays, and the emotional stress of living with Graves and TED, my system was exhausted.

My body was overwhelmed, not underactive. This realization reframed my entire healing strategy.

When Your Body Forces You to Slow Down

The months that followed were some of the most humbling and transformative of my life. I had no choice but to slow down. My body demanded rest. Not gentle rest, but complete rest. The kind of rest where getting through the day counts as an accomplishment.

I stopped pushing myself through mornings with caffeine. I stopped fasting. I stopped expecting productivity. I stopped ignoring my stress levels. I adjusted my entire lifestyle to support adrenal recovery and immune healing.

I leaned into nourishment, gentle movement, electrolytes, stable meals, nervous system support, and deep self compassion.

Addressing the Root Causes

Once I regained enough strength, I worked with my functional medicine team and completed stool testing. The results explained a lot. I had H. pylori, Blastocystis hominis, and additional bacterial overgrowth. I had significant inflammation and signs of leaky gut. My immune system had been struggling long before the flare.

My DUTCH test also revealed HPA axis dysfunction, often described as adrenal fatigue. My cortisol pattern was irregular, and stress was significantly impacting my hormonal balance.

Together, these findings painted a complete picture. My thyroid was not the entire problem. My immune system and my gut were overloaded. My stress physiology was disrupted. My body needed a full system reset.

Rebuilding My Health Slowly and Steadily

I began a structured healing plan that included:

  • herbs for gut infections
  • probiotics
  • digestive support
  • non constipating iron
  • adrenal adaptogens
  • anti inflammatory support
  • magnesium and electrolytes
  • liver supportive nutrients
  • consistent meals
  • gentle movement instead of intense exercise

My energy slowly returned. My anxiety decreased. My digestion improved. My TED symptoms began stabilizing. My nervous system finally exhaled. This was the first time in months that I felt glimpses of my old self.

What I Learned From This Chapter

This experience taught me:

  • healing is not linear
  • flares often reveal deeper imbalances
  • rest is medicine
  • symptoms are meaningful
  • functional testing can change lives
  • your body is always trying to communicate

This was the lowest point of my journey, but it was also the beginning of meaningful healing.

For Anyone Walking Through Their Own Low Point

You are not failing if you are struggling.
You are not behind.
You are not alone.
Your body is not betraying you.
Your body is asking for care in a language that can be learned.

There is a way forward, even if you cannot see it yet.
