A record amount of dollars is heading to help those fighting Waldenstrom’s macroglobulinemia (WM). According to its website, for the first time, the International Waldenstrom’s Macroglobulinemia Foundation (IWMF) approved $2.2 million to fund research. This beats out 2017’s commitment of $1.7 million.
Five projects that are a part of the IWMF-Leukemia & Lymphoma Society Strategic Research Roadmap Initiative will benefit as well. These projects range from studying the pathogenesis of Waldenstrom macroclobulinemia, to vaccines, to treatment. All of the funds being earmarked for research have been donated by people living with WM, caregivers, and Foundation supporters. The IWMF reassures donors that 100% of the money will be going to research efforts.
Along with the five research projects, the Foundation board also voted in favor of another proposal that discusses amyloidosis as it pertains to WM. One donor agreed to fund this $200,000 project throughout a span of two years.
The organization president says a big “thank you” to all who made the grants a reality.
