Amazing Students at Colorado School are Smart AND Kind

When I think back to my school days in the South during the 1960s and ‘70s, I’m still haunted by some of the crazy things that I witnessed. For example, in the sixth grade, one of my classmates didn’t like something our teacher said to her, so the girl “Roberta,” hauled off and jumped on our elderly teacher—slapping and pushing her to the ground!

Hair was flying!

Cursing ensued.

Mistakes were made.

Oh yeahhhhh. It was a slugfest that will live in infamy! Now, granted, our teacher “Mrs. King,” was reeeeeeally mean! She had the sharpest tongue this side of Atlanta, but she didn’t deserve Roberta’s punches. But Roberta had had enough of old Mrs. King’s snarky comments, so she did what she did because that’s how they settled things in Roberta’s home unfortunately. But I guess that if we live long enough, we’ll all witness terrible things in school where people disrespect each other.

OR… maybe not!

In Mapleton, Colorado, there’s a high school with hope!

Channel 9News recently did a story on a teenage gal named Bri Valdez who’s living with narcolepsy, a neurological sleep disorder that severely disrupts the normal sleep/wake cycle.

People with narcolepsy must deal with feeling incredibly fatigued—even after they’ve seemingly had a good night’s sleep. When people like Bri feel tired, it’s as though they’ve been awake for three days!

So on a typical day at school, when Bri gets tired, she finds a place to sleep—even in class! With loads of support from her teachers and classmates, Bri has the freedom to sleep at her desk, on a long bench in the hall, or even the floor if that’s what she needs.

When I watched this news clip, I’m guessing the Channel 9 News team intended to help promote awareness and education about narcolepsy. But what ALSO amazed me was the overwhelming support that Bri’s classmates and teachers showed her.

Kudos to all of the mothers and fathers and teachers who are helping to raise some great kids! The community of Mapleton rates most highly in my book.

And thanks, Channel 9News, for helping to raise awareness about narcolepsy!
