Do you know who Maree McRae is? If you don’t, read her in-depth interview featured on HollywoodtheWriteWay.com. Or, for all you lazies, here are the bullet points:
- McRae is a singer/songwriter who started to make a name for herself with her debut album, I Won’t Settle for Less
- After the release of that album, McRae stopped touring when her son was diagnosed with Common Variable Immune Deficiency (CVID)
- Shortly afterwards, she released a follow-up album, Urgency
- The title track to that album was actually written in the parking lot following her son’s CVID diagnosis
- The final track on Urgency, “Who Knows,” was also written for her son and has been used to help raise awareness for CVID
McRae explains to the media site that her son has to have blood plasma infused for 5 hours every 3 to 4 weeks due to CVID!
If you haven’t heard McRae’s music, check out “Urgency” and “Who Knows” in particular. They’re moving, heartfelt works that really capture a mother’s love. And they got me thinking about the music I’ve listened to whenever life’s thrown a curve ball.
I grew up listening to Bruce Springsteen. “Born to Run” and “Thunder Road” got me through more tough times than I care to recall. I still turn to The Boss when I’m feeling nostalgic. There’s Clapton’s “Tears in Heaven” when I just want to sulk and Survivor’s “Eye of the Tiger” when I’ve had enough of feeling low and need a guaranteed pick-me-up. Of course, some might say I have an odd taste in music.
So what about you? What songs do you listen to when you’re feeling down, or if you just got some big news? What do you listen to when you just want to be sad? And when you need to be picked up? Leave a reply below and let’s spread the music therapy.
