Is “Safety” the Magic Word to Make Discrimination Legal?

Whatever your disease is, you shouldn’t let it hold you back…not when the government can do that for you!

GobyTruckNews describes the story of three men with narcolepsy who applied for commercial driver’s licenses and were denied by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration. The reasoning for the denial? Safety, of course.

But what steps were taken to see how well the men could actually operate the vehicles? Were there tests to gauge how long the men were able to stay awake and alert while driving? Or was the decision based solely on the label that’s been slapped on them–narcoleptic–rather than what they’re actually capable of doing?

Where’s the line between discrimination and public safety? Have you ever been denied a job based on your disease? If so, what were TOLD was the reason? Take the survey and give us more details in the comments section below.
