When Ankylosing Spondylitis Symptoms Strike Young, Healthy People

When you’re young, healthy, and thriving, it’s hard to imagine that it’s possible to be taken down by a chronic disease, such as ankylosing spondylitis (AS).

Like many young people, “M” was free of medical problems until she recently began experiencing lower back pain. The pain continued to worsen, and then, strangely, her eye became red and painful. That’s what prompted her to see her doctor. And after an examination, lab tests, and x-ray scans, M’s ankylosing spondylitis symptoms finally resulted in a diagnosis.

But why?

Why was she suffering from a condition like this in her 20s?

AS occurs in about one in 200 people, typically affects more men than women, and has a strong genetic link to first-degree relatives. So if it runs in your family, your likelihood of contracting it does increase.

AS is an autoimmune disease; cells that protect the body against infection turn against it, which results in pain and stiffness in the lower back. This kind of pain often introduces itself before a person turns 40.

But one of the biggest challenges with ankylosing spondylitis is that it often occurs in women who are in the reproductive age range, and during pregnancy, many treatments can’t be used. Luckily, many women are able to conceive and bear healthy babies, and then resume treatment.

In fact, often times, sufferers are able to lead relatively normal lives, and even though the disease will likely flare up from time-to-time, it will be manageable.

That was M’s experience. After she was diagnosed, she began treatment and exercising regularly and her symptoms began to ease. She got married and gave birth to a healthy baby girl.

Of course, there is still much to learn about ankylosing spondylitis symptoms and the disease in general, but in the meantime, regulating your lifestyle and receiving the proper treatment can be a huge help.

And of course, if your body starts acting weird, don’t wait to see your doctor. If you do have a chronic condition, finding out as soon as possible is always best.
