Cystic Fibrosis Treatment Wins Breakthrough Award

As you probably know by now, this month, PatientWorthy is teaming up with CysticLife.org to spread awareness of CF and support their collaboration with the Mayo Clinic for a community-driven research project investigating the benefits of exercise for CF patients.

If you know someone who suffers from cystic fibrosis, you might be familiar with Kalydeco, a treatment by Vertex Pharmaceuticals for the condition.

As of December 3rd, Kalydeco just won the First Annual Forbes Breakthrough Drug Award with the support of the CFF! It was presented to them at the Forbes Healthcare Summit in New York.

While the judges’ panel recognized the incredible priceyness of the Kalydeco, per patient, per year, they also recognized that all of the drugs up for the award were pricey. They go on to explain that this is a systemic problem, not unique to just this drug.

Their reasons behind choosing Kalydeco? It took thirty years for a treatment to emerge since the genetic mutation that causes CF was discovered. This represents a medical breakthrough, hopefully leading to more advanced treatments.
