Would You Go This Far To Save Your Child’s Life?

Why does time always have to run so short?

Anyone who has ever experienced kidney dialysis knows the grueling process–the waiting game you play until a kidney becomes available for transplant. Typically, it’s used as a palliative measure, but most people would rather avoid it if at all possible.

As reported by WSPA, Joanie Devine has had a rare disease called cystinosis since she was born.

Cystinosis is inherited and causes the amino acid, cysteine, to build up in the kidneys, eyes, liver, and other organs. It also accumulates in the white blood cells.

Joanie got the first of two kidney transplants at 16.

The kidney failed 12 months later. The second kidney, which she received when she was 20, lasted six years. Today, Joanie is in need of another kidney, and her mom is taking matters into her own hands.

Portia Devine got out her yellow pen and wrote a message across the back window of her SUV–more than a message. It’s a plea for a living donor to come forward and help her daughter.

If you think you might be interested in helping, visit the National Kidney Foundation online. They have great information on becoming a living kidney donor.

What do you think of Portia Devine taking matters into her own hands? Do you think her method of writing out a plea on her car was drastic or appropriate given the circumstances? Give us your opinion in the comment section below!
