After years of struggling with insurance coverage and payment, Patient Worthy Contributor Lisa Douthit – living with Myasthenia Gravis has finally figured it out! The Wellness Warrior’s latest blog post, 10 Tips to Get Your Medical Bills Paid Now is chock full of tips and tricks to help prepare you for getting on the phone.

Our job as patients is to be our own advocates and fight for the life saving treatments we need, and get them covered by insurance.  It can seem overwhelming at times for sure, and it’s easy to give up.

  1. Get organized.
  2. Start with a smile in your voice.
  3. Block out your time when calling your insurance company.
  4. When getting transferred to another insurance representative, make sure the last one stays on the line with you until you know you are in the right place.
  5. If you get an answer you need, make sure that person documents it in your file and ask them to read it back to you.
  6. Make sure your doctor is taking very detailed notes on your condition and what his recommendations are for protocol.
  7. Don’t give up.
  8. If your rights are being denied, get your state representative involved.
  9. Don’t suffer, get the help you need.
  10. Have patience.
