New Show Brings Rare Patients Together

TLC launched a new show less than a week ago that is of particular interest to the rare disease community.

Their series “Two in a Million” builds off a concept that anyone with a rare condition can relate to: feeling like only those who share their diagnosis can truly understand what it’s like to be in their shoes. For people with more common diseases and disorders, it’s easier to meet others with the same illness. When you may be one of just a few in the world suffering from the disease, it’s a lot harder to find that type of solidarity.

“Two in a Million” attempts to bring rare disease patients together so that they can finally meet someone who isn’t any different from them, who has shared similar experiences. Many rare patients share a bit of a lonely feeling, and meeting someone else with their disease is concrete affirmation that they are not alone. The producers of the series hope that it will help reduce bullying by offering a glimpse of the lives of people who may look a little different, but have the same hopes, dreams and fears as anyone else. These meetings are also a profound experience for the parents of children with rare disease, who have a unique parenthood experience.
