ALS Gene Discovery Enabled by ALS Ice Bucket Challenge

You all remember the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge don’t you?

Well, according to the NY Daily News, researchers at The University of Massachusetts Medical School have discovered the gene that is responsible for ALS.

In an effort titled Project MinE, scientists were funded in part by the ALS Association, who donated funds from the Ice Bucket Challenge… $1 million to be exact.

The truth is, while finding the gene responsible for ALS is a big discovery, it doesn’t necessarily tell us what causes ALS. So of course, donations and research must continue. And at this rate, hopefully better treatments and outcomes will be the result!
