The National Organization for Rare Disorders (NORD) is the largest nonprofit independent organization for rare disease information, research, and advocacy. The organization is devoted to the treatment of all rare disorders, and it has just announced five new grantees of the 2017 Research Grant Program.
This program provides initial funding to scientific researchers for translational and/or clinical trials aimed at developing potential new diagnostic methods or treatments for rare disease. Since its launch in 1989, the program has awarded nearly $7 million for 150 grants. In turn, this money has directly led to two FDA-approved treatments and multiple scientific journal articles.
Since there is not much incentive for large pharma companies to conduct in rare disease research, this program is vital to progress scientific knowledge and understanding of rare diseases. It is funded by the community and advocacy organizations.
2017’s grantees include one for the treatment of alveolar capillary dysplasia and four for the study of appendix cancer and pseudomyxoma peritonei. For a more detailed list of these winners, as well as the title of their research, click here.
