Doctors had expressed multiple times prior to her surgery that most people who have the surgery come out with a slightly different voice. While that’s not a big deal for the normal person when dealing with the cancer, it holds much more weight when your voice is your career. Yet, Natalie Grant would come out the other end stronger than ever.

When Natalie and her husband Bernie Herms had to tell their to daughters that their mom most likely had cancer, it was a terrifying challenge. Their daughters are only ages 6 and 10. When telling them the news, they expressed feat but that quickly grew into strong faith that she would indeed be OK and recover well.
Natalie’s youngest daughter wrote her a letter of encouragement that read, “I am prayering for my mom and her canser.”

With Grammy Awards not far out and her entire career on the line, she underwent her surgery with doctor Netterville — a doctor that everyone in their high profile network recommended. The surgery had to be done perfectly– and perfectly it went.

After the surgery, the doctor shared with Natalie and Bernie that it was a success. The tumors were indeed cancerous, but they were able to remove all of it without impacting her vocal chords. Bernie took to social media to share the news with her fans and the video went viral, garnering 1 million views.

Two and a half weeks post operation, she met with a vocal coach who works with rehabbing singers post surgery. While Grant was terrified to try to sing, when she did, she shocked her coach and herself. Her voice coach even asked her, “why does your voice sound so good?!” To her relief, her voice recovered fully and allowed to sing on a tour she planned prior to the knowledge of needing surgery.

Natalie also received a full-filling nod from the Grammy’s for her song, “Clean”, which now has a whole new and personally impactful meaning in her life.
