Editor’s Note: Patient Worthy is honored to share part 6 of 10 of Elena Genik’s series of blog posts detailing her journey with Graves disease and thyroid eye disease.
The Turning Point
There was a moment when I realized that my healing was not going to come from medication alone. Medication was an important part of my journey, but it did not address why my immune system had become overactive in the first place. I needed to understand the root causes. I needed a roadmap that addressed my entire system, not just my thyroid.
Functional medicine gave me that.
Understanding the “Why”
One of the first things I learned is that autoimmune disease does not begin in the organ it attacks. The thyroid is the victim, not the source. The immune system is the root. Something in my body was confused, overwhelmed, or triggered, and understanding those triggers became the foundation of my healing.
What My Tests Revealed
My GI testing showed:
- H. pylori
- Blastocystis hominis
- bacterial overgrowth
- low beneficial flora
- inflammation
- signs of intestinal permeability
My DUTCH test showed:
- HPA axis dysfunction
- irregular cortisol pattern
- stress physiology in overdrive
My micronutrient labs showed:
- low iron
- low selenium
- low vitamin D
- low copper and zinc patterns
All of this explained my fatigue, my digestive issues, my flares, my eye symptoms, and the chaotic swings between hypo and hyperthyroidism.
Healing My Gut
Gut health is central to autoimmune stability. Healing my gut became one of the most important steps in improving my energy, managing inflammation, and stabilizing my Graves disease.
I used:
- antimicrobial herbs
- probiotics
- digestive enzymes
- gut lining support
- consistent meals
- reduced inflammatory foods
Little by little, my digestion improved. My bloating reduced. My energy became steadier.
Supporting My Adrenal System
Stress has a profound impact on thyroid autoimmunity. My body had been in survival mode for too long. I had to change how I lived, not just what I supplemented.
I incorporated:
- breathwork
- gentle yoga
- nervous system calming practices
- stable blood sugar
- sleep hygiene
- boundaries around my time and energy
Slowly, my nervous system settled and my anxiety decreased.
Using Herbal and Nutritional Support
Herbal medicine became a valuable companion in my healing.
I used:
- adaptogens
- anti inflammatory herbs
- liver supportive nutrients
- mineral repletion
- gentle immune modulation
These tools complemented everything I was doing and helped me feel stronger.
Community and Connection
Functional healing is not only about the physical body. It is also about connection. Learning through community, speaking openly about my symptoms, and hearing from others gave me emotional support I did not realize I needed.
Healing is not just medical. It is emotional, psychological, and spiritual.
What I Want Patients to Know
Functional and holistic medicine are not alternatives to conventional care. They are complementary. They fill the gaps that conventional medicine often leaves open. They address root causes, lifestyle, nutrition, stress, and environmental factors that shape autoimmune outcomes.
Healing is not about choosing one approach over another. It is about choosing a complete approach.
