For more than a century Alzheimer’s disease has been thought to be incurable. But a recent study published in the New England Journal of Medicine (NEJM), and reported on by CWRU, negates that theory and overrides any suggestion that Alzheimer’s disease may be incurable.
The study emphasizes the potential to reverse neurological recovery of Alzheimer’s disease. It is noteworthy that the NEJM reference states “complete” recovery not just neurological recovery in animal models.
Alzheimer’s is a top 10 leading cause of death in the United States. Currently the number of people estimated to be living with the disease is 6.9 million worldwide. This number is expected to double to approximately 14 million by the year 2060.
Tau Tangles
Tau supports interior brain cells and transports food and important messages in healthy brains. However, if the brain cell is unhealthy, tau breaks away and forms tau tangles.
Scientists are now focusing on antibody therapies that clear abnormal protein clumps in the brain and slow cognitive decline. They are seeking avenues that prevent plaque buildup before it begins.
