FDA Authorizes Lantheus’ Tau PET Imaging Agent for Alzheimer’s Disease Evaluation

FDA Authorizes Lantheus’ Tau PET Imaging Agent for Alzheimer’s Disease Evaluation

As reported on Fierce BioTech, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration has granted approval to Lantheus’ positron emission tomography (PET) imaging agent Tauklarify (MK-6240), expanding diagnostic options for the assessment of Alzheimer’s disease.

Tauklarify is indicated for adults with cognitive impairment who are undergoing evaluation for Alzheimer’s disease. The radiopharmaceutical is designed to detect tau neurofibrillary tangles in the brain, a hallmark feature associated with the progression of Alzheimer’s pathology. Lantheus emphasized that the imaging agent is not intended for use in other neurological disorders characterized by tau accumulation.

According to the company, the approval underscores the growing role of tau-targeted imaging as clinicians seek more comprehensive approaches to diagnosing and characterizing Alzheimer’s disease. Tau PET scans can provide information that complements amyloid imaging and other diagnostic assessments, potentially offering a broader picture of disease burden.

The FDA decision was backed by results from two clinical studies involving more than 500 participants. Trial participants included individuals with mild cognitive impairment, patients with mild Alzheimer’s disease dementia, and cognitively healthy volunteers. Data from these studies supported the agent’s ability to identify tau pathology relevant to Alzheimer’s disease evaluation.

Experts in the field view tau imaging as an increasingly valuable research and clinical tool. By helping visualize the presence and distribution of tau deposits in the brain, PET imaging may improve understanding of disease progression and support the development of emerging therapeutic strategies.

The regulatory milestone arrives shortly after Lantheus announced plans to be acquired by radiopharmaceutical company Curium in a transaction valued at approximately $8 billion. The deal, which is expected to close during the first half of next year, calls for Curium to purchase all outstanding Lantheus shares for $102.50 per share. Shareholders may also receive additional payments tied to future sales performance milestones across several Lantheus product franchises, including prostate cancer imaging, neurology, and Definity-related products through 2030.

The approval of Tauklarify strengthens Lantheus’ position in the neuroimaging market and reflects continued momentum in the development of diagnostic technologies aimed at improving the detection and understanding of Alzheimer’s disease.
