The protective effect spans multiple vaccine types, with some offering more than 70% risk reduction.

Researchers at Cleveland Clinic’s Cole Eye Institute conducted an extensive review of electronic health records across numerous U.S. medical institutions from 2006 through 2025. By comparing vaccinated patients with carefully matched unvaccinated control groups, they tracked the emergence of new uveitis cases in the 12 months following immunization.
The investigation encompassed approximately one million patients across five vaccine categories: COVID-19, human papillomavirus (HPV), varicella (chickenpox), and two formulations of herpes zoster (shingles) protection. To ensure study validity, researchers excluded individuals with pre-existing eye inflammation or known viral-induced disease.
Key Findings Paint an Optimistic Picture
The COVID-19 vaccine demonstrated particularly strong initial effects, with recipients showing an 82% lower incidence of uveitis at three months post-vaccination—a protective advantage that gradually diminished but remained substantial at 65% reduction after one year.
Varicella immunization produced the most durable protection, maintaining a 71% risk reduction throughout the 12-month observation window. The shingles vaccines—both the established live version and newer recombinant option—offered comparable benefits, each reducing uveitis risk by approximately 69%.
HPV vaccination, administered primarily to younger populations, showed a more modest though still clinically meaningful 56% risk reduction over the study period.
Clinical Implications and Questions Ahead
These observations suggest that vaccination-induced immune responses may have broader protective mechanisms than previously recognized. However, experts emphasize that this retrospective analysis cannot definitively establish causation.
