New research presented by Teva Pharmaceuticals at Psych Congress Elevate 2026 adds to the growing body of evidence supporting the use of Austedo (deutetrabenazine) and Austedo XR for the treatment of tardive dyskinesia (TD). Findings from three studies indicate that the therapy may provide meaningful symptom reductions across a broad range of patients, including those with mild disease, while also highlighting the importance of long-term treatment and improved disease awareness.
Real-World Registry Shows Improvement in Mild TD
One of the studies drew on data from the IMPACT-TD registry, described as the largest real-world observational study of patients with tardive dyskinesia. Researchers evaluated individuals with mild TD who initiated treatment with Austedo or its extended-release formulation.
After three months of therapy, participants demonstrated reductions in involuntary movement severity as measured by the Abnormal Involuntary Movement Scale (AIMS). Importantly, psychiatric stability was maintained during treatment. Patients who experienced difficulties with daily functioning, communication, social interactions, or other quality-of-life measures at baseline also reported improvements as TD symptoms lessened.
These findings suggest that addressing TD early, even in cases considered mild, may provide benefits beyond movement control alone.
Long-Term Study Highlights Progressive Response Over Time
Additional data came from the ongoing three-year RIM-TD open-label study, which examined long-term treatment outcomes. Investigators found that more than half of participants achieved meaningful improvements in AIMS scores within the first 15 weeks of treatment.
Notably, response rates continued to increase with longer therapy duration. An additional 23% of patients who had not responded by week 15 experienced improvement later in the study, indicating that some individuals may realize benefits only after extended treatment exposure.
The results support the value of continued therapy and may help clinicians set realistic expectations regarding treatment timelines.
Caregiver Education May Improve Recognition and Diagnosis
A separate study focused on the impact of TD-specific educational materials distributed online to caregivers. The content, developed in partnership with patient advocacy organizations, was designed to increase awareness of TD symptoms and encourage discussions with healthcare professionals.
Within six months, more than half of care recipients considered at risk for TD had spoken with a healthcare provider about the condition. Approximately one-third subsequently received a TD diagnosis.
Researchers noted that these findings demonstrate how targeted educational initiatives can help address underrecognition of TD and facilitate earlier identification of affected patients.

According to Richard Jackson, MD, assistant clinical adjunct professor in the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Michigan School of Medicine and principal investigator of the IMPACT-TD registry, the data reinforce the clinical relevance of treating even mild forms of the disorder.
He noted that seemingly minor involuntary movements can significantly affect multiple aspects of a patient’s life, including social functioning, communication, and overall well-being. The new evidence, he said, may provide clinicians with greater confidence to identify and manage TD before symptoms become more severe.

Tardive dyskinesia is a chronic movement disorder associated with certain psychiatric medications and is characterized by involuntary, repetitive movements that may affect the face, trunk, or extremities. These symptoms can have a substantial impact on daily functioning and quality of life.
Austedo and Austedo XR are vesicular monoamine transporter 2 (VMAT2) inhibitors approved by the US Food and Drug Administration for the treatment of tardive dyskinesia in adults.
