Azzur Fore ALS Golf Tournament

What is ALS?

As described, the Azzur Fore ALS Golf Tournament is designed to raise funds and advance ALS research. But what exactly is ALS? Also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease, ALS is a progressive neurological disease. In a small amount of cases, ALS is familial. However, a majority of patients develop ALS with no known cause. As the disease progresses, nerve cells in the brain, brain stem, and spinal cord die, causing issues with voluntary movement. In many cases, ALS is fatal as patients lose the ability to breathe. ALS tends to affect Caucasian males between 60-69 at the highest rate, though it can affect other groups. Some ALS symptoms include:

  • Slowed or slurred speech
  • Difficulty performing daily tasks or small movements
  • Frequent tripping and falling
  • Poor posture
  • Progressive inability to move muscles throughout the body
