Freeway to 50: Chive Charities Seeks Medical Grant Recipients

Chive Charities is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization committed to providing patient advocacy and support. They have raised money for a young girl with a mutated CAMK2B gene to receive intensive physical therapy at NAPA boot camp, and assisted a boy with arteriovenous malformation to get an eye-gaze machine to help him communicate. They helped a veteran who lost his limbs to build a cabin. Each story that they share is eye-opening and impactful. Now, Chive Charities is looking to extend their reach even further with their Freeway to 50 initiative.

Chive Charities

Since the organization was formed in 2012, Chive Charities has provided medical grants to more than 350 causes nationwide. Currently, Chive Charities assists 3 main groups of people: first responders, veterans, and members of the rare disease community. Rather than explaining why someone should donate to a cause, Chive Charities takes a unique and patient-first approach: letting someone share their story, educate, and raise awareness. Their goal is to help others and make the world at least 10% happier. You can learn more about Chive Charities here.

Freeway to 50

Currently, Chive Charities is looking to grant medical donations throughout all 50 states. But they’re still missing a few! This is where you come in. Do you know anybody who is looking for assistance? Are you looking to find a new way to empower patients or participate in patient advocacy? Do you have a story to tell?

Eligibility Requirements

The non-profit is looking for medical grant recipients in Alaska, Hawaii, Mississippi, and West Virginia. Eligibility requirements include:

  • Being part of one of the following groups:
    • Someone with a diagnosed rare disease or condition. Proof of a diagnosis is required. Chive Charities uses the definition provided by NORD and GARD to determine if a condition is rare. Generally, rare conditions are those which affect under 200,000 people.
    • Veterans who received an honorable discharge.
    • First responders (police officers, paramedics, and firemen).
  • Grant items must not be fully covered by insurance. They also must be medically related to whatever conditions or symptoms someone is experiencing. Grant items can be used to support mental or physical health.
  • Any grants given to an organization require the organization to be a public charity with 501(c)3 designation. Organizations with over $10 million/year in revenue are not qualified.
  • Not previously raising $20,000 or more. Those who have raised $20,000 or received medical resources/items costing $20,000 may be disqualified from receiving a grant.

What is Covered vs. Not Covered?

For medical grant recipients, Chive Charities will assist with mobility items, developmental and learning devices, modifications to make homes and cars more accessible, therapy sessions and equipment, and other medical devices or therapies noted by a doctor.

However, the organization will not cover previous medical bills, costs associated with in-vitro fertilization (IVF), loss of income, funeral costs, or experimental procedures that are not FDA-approved.
