Everybody Wins a Trophy for Raising the Aplastic Anemia Research Big Bucks

A recent event held in Houston, Texas, raised over $27,000 to help fund research and raise awareness about bone marrow cancer.

The Frontier Fiesta 5K Run, now in its third year, is sponsored by the University of Houston, and many of the participants were students.

The most common bone marrow cancer is multiple myeloma, but there’s also a lesser known disease: Aplastic Anemia, which occurs when the bone marrow doesn’t produce enough red and white blood cells, as well as an underproduction of platelets. Symptoms include:

  • fatigue
  • weakness
  • a lightheaded feeling upon standing
  • feeling winded when exercising
  • rapid heart beat
  • paleness

If you have any of the symptoms of aplastic anemia, be sure to talk to your doctor!
